Lot #18: 1928 New York Yankees World Series Champions Team Signed Baseball With 20 Signatures Including Ruth, Gehrig and Lazzeri - 9 Hall of Famers Total! (PSA/DNA & Beckett)

Description

The 1927 Yankees are often heralded as the greatest team of all-time, yet their 1928 club might have been even stronger. The 1928 edition won 101 games as opposed to the 110 the previous season, but completion in the American League was much more ferocious in 1928. The Philadelphia A’s, for example, had seven future Hall of Famers, and this core team would go on to win three consecutive pennants and a pair of World Championships.

But as good as the A’s were that year, the Yankees boasted NINE future Hall of Famers – a record that still stands. Besides the veterans like Ruth, Gehrig, Hoyt, Pennock, Lazzeri and Combs who made up the 1927 team, the Yankees of 1928 were bolstered by rookies Bill Dickey and Leo Durocher and experienced pitchers Stan Coveleski and Tom Zachary. Not surprisingly, the Yankees repeated their previous year’s performance in the World Series by sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals.

This incredible Reach Official American League E. Barnard baseball captures 20 members of the 1928 World Championship team. Babe Ruth appears in his customary position on the sweet spot, his signature stunningly bold against the cream colored leather. Fellow Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey, Earle Combs, Tony Lazzeri, and Leo Durocher join the Babe on adjacent panels. The supporting cast includes catchers Pat Collins and Johnny Grabowski, infielders Joe Dugan and Mark Koenig, outfielders Cedric Durst, Bob Meusel and Ben Paschel and pitchers Fred Heimach, Hank Johnson, George Pipgras, Rosy Ryan and Tom Zachary. The signatures are well preserved, Ruth being among the strongest, and display beautifully. The ball comes with a full LOA Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication for the signatures as well as PSA/DNA (AC03609)
