Lot #20: 1965 Power Memorial Academy MVP Trophy Presented to Lew Alcindor (Abdul-Jabbar LOA)

Description

Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was awarded this Power Memorial Academy MVP award for the 1965 season, his senior year of high school. Abdul-Jabbar, then known as Lew Alcindor, was a dominant force in New York City high school basketball, leading Power on a 71-game winning streak and claiming three straight C.H.S.A.A. titles for Power. Abdul-Jabbar was recognized in both 1964 and 1965 as Mr. Basketball USA, becoming the first player to win the award twice in a row since Jerry Lucas. After his senior season at Power, Abdul-Jabbar switched coasts to play for UCLA under John Wooden, and the rest is history.

This offered trophy measures approximately 15 inches tall. The trophy is constructed of a marbled pedestal with a trophy cup and a statuette of a basketball player crowning the hardware. A plaque affixed to the pedestal reads “Power / M.V.P. / Lew Alcindor / 1965”. This stunning trophy is in good condition. This item derives directly from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a personally hand-signed LOA from Kareem will accompany this item.
