Lot #81: 1991 Magic Johnson Game Used & Signed Los Angeles Lakers Home Jersey (Letter of Provenance, MEARS A10 & JSA)

Description

Hall of Famer Earvin Magic Johnson spent his last full season in the NBA during the 1990-91 season before his stunning announcement prior to the start of the 1991-92 season that he contracted the HIV virus and was retiring from the Lakers. Johnson led the Lakers to the NBA Finals, losing out to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in Jordan’s first NBA title.

Johnson wore this home yellow Lakers jersey towards the tail end of the 1991 season as marked on the jersey. The game experts at MEARS determined that other players wore jerseys with “YEAR 1991” tags during the 1990-91 season, as this jersey displays. The jersey features “LAKERS” across the chest, “JOHNSON” across the back and his number “42” on both sides in purple-on-white tackle twill. The front tail of the jersey features a “Champion” manufacturer’s tag with size “44” with an additional stitched tag to the left that reads “YEAR 1991” and “BODY LENGTH +3,” indicating the jersey’s year and size modifications. The jersey shows evidence of light game use and Magic has signed his full name Earvin Magic Johnson in black marker below his number on the back. This comes with a LOA from MEARS (316479) for the game use and has been graded a perfect GU 10, plus a handwritten LOA from John Black, who was the director of Public Relations for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1989-2017 and states that this jersey was given to him during the 1991 season. Additionally, there is a LOA from JSA (Z89844) for the signature.
