Lot #44: 1933 V353 World Wide Gum (Canadian Goudey) Color Progression Proof Sheets (8) Featuring #1 Benny Bengough

Description

The complete set of eight uncut baseball card sheets – representing the full color-printing progression of two dozen 1933 World Wide Gum depictions – is presented. Intact production sheets of such desirable 1930's issues as this one are very seldom seen, and the few surviving examples are permanently housed in advanced collections. On the offered sheets, the cards' illustrations are arranged in 6-card-by-4-card, 14-1/4" x 11-1/2" rectangles constituting colorful galleries of baseball glory.

The 1933 Goudey set established a gold standard for all modern gum-card issues, and it was the most important of the company's products. The V353 World Wide Gum ("Canadian Goudey") release emerged as an ambitious effort by Goudey to issue an equally impressive set for the Canadian market. These color-process proof sheets were created prior to the issue's true production run. The blank-backed sheets enabled verification of color intensity and alignment, and it's probable that this one-of-a-kind set was preserved for archival purposes once its primary role had been fulfilled.

The eight proof sheets, with descriptions of their respective color characteristics, are:

- Final, full-color sheet, boasting a bright surface that reflects outstanding focus and clarity;

- Red/Yellow/Blue sheet (black print absent);

- Yellow/Red sheet;

- Yellow sheet;

- Red sheet;

- Pink sheet;

- Blue sheet;

- Black/Blue sheet.

The sheets' content is stellar, and is highlighted by card #1 Benny Bengough and seven Hall of Famers: #'s 2 Dazzy Vance, 25 Paul Waner, 29 Jimmy Foxx, 31 Tony Lazzeri, 35 Al Simmons, 47 Heinie Manush and 49 Frank Frisch. In all, twenty-four different players are present, including card #'s 1 Bengough, 2 Vance, 3 Critz, 4 Schuble, 5 Herman, 25 P. Waner, 26 Cissell, 27 Connally, 28 Bartell, 29 Foxx, 30 Hogan, 31 Lazzeri, 32 Clancy, 33 Kress, 34 O'Farrell, 35 Simmons, 45 Benton, 46 Allen, 47 Manush, 48 McManus, 49 Frisch, 50 Brandt, 51 Grimm and 52 Cohen. Although the sheets have no printing on their backs, subtle differences in cardstock quality and color tone identify these images as the "Canadian Goudey" versions of the classic release.

At some point after the completion of its proofing/editing function, this intact assembly was "bound" for storage as a unit. This was accomplished by two neatly punched holes at the left edge, affecting the Bengough and Manush designs. Blank-paper cover leaves (which accompany) served as protection for the book-like group of card sheets. (The top-layer cover leaf displays two handwritten notations, one of which reads, "Baseball Series/Benny Bengough #1/Sept 33.")

All of the sheets remain clean and crisp in appearance, and concede almost no evidence of past handling. The card images (with the exceptions of Bengough and Manush, as noted) reveal essentially perfect preservation quality.

Here is an incredible opportunity to obtain a very significant and attractive array of uncut sheets, a truly unique line-up that claims the additional attribute of outstanding vintage star power.
