Lot #7: 1950-1953 Stan Musial Game Used Hillerich & Bradsby M117 Model Bat - 3 Straight Batting Title Seasons (1950-52) (PSA/DNA GU 9.5)

Description

Already a Cardinals legend at the age of 29, Stan Musial began the 1950s with a 30-game hitting streak. By the All-Star break he was batting over .350. The great Ty Cobb underlined the greatness of Musial when he wrote an article in Life Magazine naming the Cardinals slugger one of only two current players (Phil Rizzuto was the other) who could be mentioned in the same breath as the old-time greats. Mind you, Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio were still playing during this time. A look at Stan The Man’s stats from 1950 to 1953 shows how great he truly was – three consecutive batting titles from 1950 to 1952, 2-time NL leader in slugging and double, and ended the 1953 season by batting over the .300 mark for the 12th consecutive year.

This outstanding bat was used by Stan Musial during that four-year period of 1950-53 when he averaged .343 and banged out 111 home runs. Stan’s Hillerich & Bradsby M117 model bat exhibits outstanding use with a handle crack. Numerous ball marks and stitch impressions can be seen on the right, left and back barrel and Cleat imprints are present on all sides. Green and red bat rack paint streaks are visible, and the handle has been scored to enhance the grip. The model number “M117” is stamped into the knob and Musial’s iconic number “6” is handwritten in faded black marker. About as complete a Musial game used bat can get, dating from the prime years of his Hall of Fame career. This bat comes from the collection of Cincinnati Reds clubhouse manager Bernie Stowe. The bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B16592) for the game use and has been graded a near-perfect GU 9.5.
