Lot #50: 1985 Rickey Henderson Game Used NY Yankees Home Jersey Photo Matched To 4 Games Including The All-Star Game & Yankees’ Single-Season Stolen Base Record Game (Sports Investors Authentication & Beckett)

Description

The New York Yankees have long been known for their power, as evident by their nickname the Bronx Bombers. However, through the years, the Yankees have had their share of fleet-footed stars as well. No one was more adept at stealing bases than Major League’s all-time leader Rickey Henderson, who New York acquired from Oakland in December of 1984 in a multi-player trade.

Coming into the 1985 season, Fritz Maisel had owned the Yankees stolen base record with 74, which he set way back in 1914. Henderson was a stolen base machine in 1985 and by September, Henderson was fast approaching Maisel’s long-held record. Wearing this offered home pinstriped home jersey, Henderson passed Maisel for the Yankees all-time stolen base mark when he stole second base in the bottom of the third inning off Detroit Tigers’ pitcher Jack Morris and catcher Lance Parrish. With that swipe of second, Henderson set the new mark of stolen bases at 75 and ultimately finished the 1985 season with 80. This button-down pinstriped jersey has been photo matched to four games, including the 1985 All-Star Game where Henderson was the starting left fielder and went 1-for-3, scoring the only run for the Junior Circuit. The other games that this jersey has been photo matched to are the September 25th game in which Henderson set the Yankees’ record, along with matches to the September 8th and 14th games. In those three regular season games, Henderson combined for 6-for-10, with one home run (his 21st of the season), seven runs scored, two doubles and four stolen bases.

This size 41 jersey was manufactured by Wilson and features the Yankees interlocking “NY” sewn on the upper left chest in navy tackle twill. There is an off-white inner lining around the collar and down the buttons. “Henderson 85 2” is embroidered on a white patch sewn on the off-white inner lining on the back collar. Henderson’s number “24” is sewn on in navy tackle twill on the back of the jersey and the left sleeve has an approximately one-inch thick black armband in memory of longtime clubhouse attendant Pete Sheehy. The Wilson size 41 tag is sewn on the inside bottom front left tail. The jersey displays moderate game use with some staining and team repairs. Henderson has signed this jersey on the bottom left with an inscription above his signature that reads “This is the uniform I wore to break the Yankee season stolen base record of “85” Best Wishes”. A truly magnificent historical jersey that not only is tied to a then-Yankees’ record, but also a home run and multiple stolen bases. This jersey has been authenticated and photo matched by the experts at Sports Investors Authentication, who have provided a LOA. Additionally, there is a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication (A56157) for Henderson’s signature and inscription.
