Lot #85: 1958 Hank Aaron World Series Game Used Hillerch & Bradsby S2 Model Bat (MEARS A10)

Description

It is the true test of a superstar to be able to rise to the occasion and perform at an elite level in the World Series. Names like Ruth, Gehrig, Koufax, Bench and Gibson immediately come to mind as the kind of stars who are able to take their talents to an even higher level when playing in the Fall Classic. Hank Aaron, too, is one of those men. Although Aaron only had two World Series opportunities, he made sure to make the most of them.

In 1957 he punished Yankees pitchers at the rate of .393 plus a trio of home runs. The following year he again faced the New Yorkers and continued his domination by batting .333 with a pair of doubles. 1958 was a banner year for Hank. Just in his fifth big league season and already an MVP winner with a batting title and home run crown to his name, Aaron was getting better by the game. 1958 saw him increasing his skill set by winning the first of his three Gold Glove Awards as an outfielder, proving he was as dangerous with a glove on his hand as he was with a bat in it. In addition to batting .326, Aaron combined with teammates Eddie Mathews and Wes Covington to slug 85 home runs as the Braves won the second straight pennant. As they had in 1957, the Yanks and Braves fought to a deciding Game 7. But despite Aaron’s .333, New York won the game and Series. Still, Aaron’s performance in the 1957 and 1958 World Series showed that he belonged among the immortals of the game – and his career was just beginning.

This beautiful Hillerich & Bradsby S2 model bat was created for Hank Aaron to use in the 1958 World Series. Featuring the custom barrel stamping “WORLD SERIES 1958” and “MILWAUKEE BRAVES,” the bat is un-cracked and displays moderate game use. There are several ball marks found on the barrel along with slight checking from repeated ball contact. Bat rack paint streaks are present and the model number “S2” is stamped into the knob end. The ash wood has taken on a golden hue over the years which shows off the barrel and center brand stamping nicely. A tremendously rare bat that was specially made for the last of Hank Aaron’s two World Series appearances. When acquired by our consignor, it came authenticated by PSA which decribed the bat as issued. As an astute collector he disagreed with the designation, submitted the bat to MEARS which confirmed his evaluation and issued the bat its grade of game used Mears A10. This bat comes with a LOA from MEARS (316372) for the game use and has been graded a perfect A10.
