Lot #27: Incredible 1961/62 Fleer Basketball Unopened Five-Cent Wax Pack – Wilt Chamberlain on Back – PSA NM 7 "1 of 1!"

Description

Graded NM 7 by PSA. Presented here is the lone, superior specimen of this pack's Chamberlain Back version among a total of just two examples validated by PSA. This unopened 5¢ wax pack of 1961/62 Fleer cards was produced well in advance of Topps' long run of basketball products, and more than two decades before Fleer itself regained control of a new and vibrant card-market niche. Two aspects of this item make it particularly amazing. The '61/62 Fleer cards were minimally distributed, as fan loyalty with regard to basketball was in the developmental stage. And, they were produced in just the smallest of quantities, with a correspondingly miniscule survival rate. The offered pack, with its clearly visible Wilt Chamberlain content, is among the most compelling of its type known to exist. In addition to Wilt's desirable Rookie Card, the intriguing item could contain a never-touched copy of such a coveted star or rookie subject as #1 Attles, 3 Baylor, 10 Cousy, 19 Heinsohn, 34 Pettit, 36 Robertson, 38 Russell, 43 West, 47 Chamberlain IA, 49 Cousy IA, 61 Robertson IA, 62 Russell IA or 66 West IA. Unopened material from the 1961/62 Fleer issue, especially in this impressive state of preservation with a highest-profile star showing, is virtually never found in the modern hobby. Near Mint condition.
