Lot #1013: 1946-49 Bobby Doerr Game Used and Signed Hillerich & Bradsby D2 Model Bat (PSA/DNA GU 8.5)

Description

Boston's Bobby Doerr is often called one of the best second baseman of all-time. Looking back over his Hall of Fame career, it is not hard to see why, as the 9-time All-Star was the rock of the Red Sox infield over the course of three decades. At the plate he held his own with teammates Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx and Dom DiMaggio. This bat dates from 1946 to 1949, with two of his finest seasons coming in 1948 and 1949. In 1948 Doerr hit .285 set a fielding record by handling 414 consecutive chances without an error. The next year he .309 as the Sox lost the pennant to New York on the week of the season. Doerr remained with the Sox after his playing days and he helped make Carl Yastrzemski a Hall of Fame hitter just like himself. 1946 and 1947 were also solid seasons as Doerr missed the entire 1945 season due to his military service in World War II.

This offered Hillerich & Bradsby D2 model bat was used by Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr and dates to his post-military service from 1946-49. This bat displays excellent game use with a crack on the handle that has been repaired. The barrel has slight checking or grain swelling from repeated ball contact and there are also several ball marks, stitch impressions and cleat imprints present on the barrel. There are green bat rack streaks on the handle and the model number “D2” is stamped on the knob. Adding to this already impressive bat is the bold blue marker signature of Doerr on the barrel with the inscription “HOF 86”. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B02709) for the game use and has been graded a solid GU 8.5, plus a COA from PSA/DNA (AH89217) for the signature.
