Lot #75: First Hall of Fame Class Signed Check Lot of (5) Including Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner (PSA/DNA)

Description

Presented is one of the finest PSA/DNA collection of signed checks from the five original 1936 Hall of Fame elected members. This five-check complete set includes cancelled and hand signed checks from Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson, with each graded Authentic by PSA/DNA. All five of these original Hall of Famers are highly desirable, but the Mathewson signed check brings this collection in to a new dimension. Mathewson was infamously poisoned with mustard gas during World War I drills, died several years later in 1925 at Saranac Lake, NY, and actual signatures of The Big Six are extremely rare. None of these beautiful signatures are affected by the usual cancellations, and all checks are completely in the HOFers own hand. Includes: Christy Mathewson – check dated “July 5 - 1922”, written on Adirondack National Bank of Saranac Lake, NY for “$24.42” paid to “Fred T Tremble” and signed “Christy Mathewson” in black fountain pen. PSA/DNA (83436081).

The next check is from Ty Cobb with his name pre-printed on the left. Dated “Aug_30” 19 “56”, written on First National Bank of Nevada for “$4.53” paid to “Alhambra-National Water Co”. Cobb signed in green pen “Tyrus R. Cobb” on the bottom right. PSA/DNA (83814205). The next check is from Babe Ruth with his name pre-printed vertically on the left and dated “Jan 19, 1942”, written on Chemical Bank of New York for “$50.00” paid to “Cash.” Ruth signed his name in the bottom right corner “GH Ruth” in black fountain pen ink. PSA/DNA (83804135). The next check is from “The Big Train” Walter Johnson, whose check was dated “April 1, 1941”. The check was payable to “John Burke for “$45.00” written on The Germantown Bank. Johnson signed “Walter Johnson” in black ink. PSA/DNA (83804134). The final check is from Honus Wagner, whose check was drawn from the “Carnegie Trust Company” and dated “Feb. 12, 1920”. The check was written for “$9.70” paid to “Tokes Hammer & Auto Supply” and sighed “John H Wagner” in black ink. PSA/DNA (83690320). While the individual values of these checks are quite significant, the complete collection has to be valued at even a greater amount than the individual value due to the immense challenge of acquiring high authentic examples of each of these Hall of Famers, especially Mathewson whose authentic checks are near impossible to locate.
