Lot #18: 1955/56 Parkhurst Hockey Complete Set (79) Including PSA MINT 9 Examples! - #2 on the PSA Set Registry!

Description

Each card has been graded by PSA. Presented is a complete, 79-card set of 1955/56 Parkhurst hockey cards. With its 7.89 GPA (Set Rating: 8.46), this assembly merits "#2 Current Finest" accolades on the PSA Set Registry!

Redolent with nostalgic inspiration throughout, this Parkhurst release showcases contemporary players from the core of the era's much smaller, "Old-Time" NHL, including such period luminaries as Maurice "Rocket" Richard, Jacques Plante and Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion. The scope of this classic release doesn't stop there: a selection of hockey legends – including Georges Vezina and Howie Morenz – is featured, along with individual cards highlighting the Maple Leafs' and Canadiens' respective venues, and there's even a gathering of priceless "in-action" presentations ("Leaf Speedsters Attack").

A widely acclaimed, artistic masterpiece as well as a perennial collector favorite, the release affords optimal enjoyment at the highest degrees of preservation ... levels displayed in abundance within the offered array. Complicating this equation in lesser assemblies is the fact that, with a built-in liability in the form of a full-bleed, red-bordered caption area, any card from this issue is highly susceptible to edge wear, and the items are achingly difficult to find in PSA NM-MT 8 condition or finer.

The thoroughly enviable, high-quality '55/56 Parkhurst gallery offered here is just a few upgrades away from claiming #1 PSA Registry status. This is an especially meaningful claim, as this year's Parkhurst effort is demonstrably tougher to construct at the higher levels than any of the decade's other mainstream Parkhurst productions.

Includes: Graded PSA MINT 9: 5 cards w/#'s 8, 48, 52 McNeil, 62 and 64. All are population "1 of 1" with none graded higher; PSA NM-MT+ 8.5: 6 cards w/#'s 4, 9, 23, 31, 43 Geoffrion and 46. All but #43 are population "1 of 1" with none graded higher; PSA NM-MT 8: 59 cards. Highlights include: #'s 3 Horton, 37 Richard, 38 Moore, 44 Beliveau, 45 Harvey, 46 Bouchard, 56 Vezina OTG, 57 Morenz OTG, 71 "Plante is Protected", 74 "Beliveau Bats Puck", 75 "Leaf Speedsters Attack", 76 "Curry Scores Again" and 77 "Jammed on the Boards"; PSA NM+ 7.5: 1 card, #47; PSA NM 7: 8 cards w/#'s 1 Lumley, 50 Plante, 68, 70 "Lum Lum Stops Boom Boom", 72 "Rocket Roars Through", 73 Richard Tests Lumley", 78 "Montreal Forum" and 79 "Maple Leaf Gardens."

As a point of reference on value, the #5 1955/56 Parkhurst PSA Registry Set sold for $96,000 in February 2019. That set contained no PSA MINT 9 examples. Additionally, the issue's two key cards – #'s 1 Lumley and 79 Maple Leaf Gardens – are both represented in the #2 assembly presented here by superior specimens grading a full tier higher than #5's examples in each instance.

This year's Parkhurst effort is demonstrably tougher to construct at the higher levels than any of the decade's other mainstream Parkhurst productions. Here's how the various 1950s Parkhurst sets rank (omitting the specialized 1956/57 Parkhurst Quaker Oats backs), in terms of available GPA, on the PSA Set Registry:
1951/52 = eight, 8.0 GPA or finer PSA sets
1952/53 = three, 8.0 GPA or finer PSA sets
1953/54 = six, 8.0 GPA or finer PSA sets
1954/55 = three, 8.0 GPA or finer PSA sets
1955/56 = no, 8.0 GPA or finer PSA sets
1957/58 = seven, 8.0 GPA or finer PSA sets
1958/59 = thirteen, 8.0 GPA or finer PSA sets
1959/60 = seventeen, 8.0 GPA or finer PSA sets
