Lot #1390: 1985 Gary McLain Villanova Wildcats NCAA Basketball Championship Player Ring (PSA/DNA)

Description

In 1985 the Villanova Wildcats shocked the sports world when they upset the No. 1 ranked Georgetown Hoyas, 66-64, to become National Champions. One of the key players on that title team was Gary McLain, number 22, who was the starting point guard that season. McClain was also the MVP of the championship game against Georgetown. This is the original ring that was presented for Gary McLain and it features a 10-point diamond set inside a "V" and atop a blue stone, with four smaller 10-point diamond stones top and bottom. The words "NATIONAL CHAMPIONS" appears on the perimeter in raised relief. One shank has the name "GARY MCLAIN" with a large V which is engraved with "VILLANOVA". The words "FAMILY" and "THE BIG EAST" also appear.

The other shank has the school name "VILLANOVA" across the top with an image of a church with the words "UNITY", "TRUTH" and "LOVE" engraved. Below is the term "BIG 5 CHAMPIONS" indicating this squad also won the Philadelphia city title. With the band of this 10K solid gold, size 10 and approximate 35.4-gram ring, is the "10K" symbol. “Gary McLain Thank You Mom” is also engraved on the inner band and this ring is 10K gold. This beauty is derived from one of the biggest upset wins in NCAA basketball tournament history and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AF01497).
