Lot #16: 1925 Exhibits Lou Gehrig Rookie Card – PSA EX-MT 6 (MK)

Description

Graded EX-MT 6 (MK) by PSA. Hall of Famer. This is one of barely three dozen copies in total, recorded across all levels, in PSA’s census reporting. An understandably coveted, much sought-after period memento, this postcard-sized showpiece picturing Henry L. Gehrig is widely considered to be its subject's Rookie Card: the item was produced for the Iron Horse's first full season with the New York Yankees. The projection of confidence inherent in the young slugger's follow-through seems prophetically complemented by the stockiness of Gehrig's frame in this arcade card's fascinating black-and-white illustration. Both attributes would serve him well during the years that followed, and it's hard to believe that, at the time this collectible's glimpse was recorded for posterity, Gehrig had only 38 career Major League at-bats to his name. The attention-grabbing, debut-year souvenir's premium dimensions, along with haphazard distribution conducted only through amusement park vending machines, have ensured that the supply of this exceptionally visual memento will forever be dwarfed by the demand for it among those who revere Lou Gehrig's legacy. This superior specimen displays its famous subject (in news-photo style) in a nicely detailed image. Routine corner touches and extremely mild, clean wear elsewhere on the item's periphery do not impinge upon the aesthetic drama of the blank-backed, 3-3/8" x 5-3/8" collectible. A handwritten notation ("Lou Gehrig") on the card's unprinted reverse side has been largely erased and is barely discernible. Excellent to Mint condition (qualified as noted), with a quality of eye appeal clearly exceeding that level.
