Lot #662: Babe Ruth Single Signed & Inscribed "To My Little Pal" Official League Baseball (Beckett)

Description

From 1920 to his death in 1948, no athlete in the world was more recognizable than Babe Ruth. Wherever he went - theaters, restaurants, train stations - the great man was inundated with requests for his autograph. While many athletes today look at signing an autograph as a chore and bother, Ruth felt otherwise. To him, his flawless script on a ball or piece of paper was the least he could do to make a fan happy or bring a smile to a little boy’s face. To him, it just was part of being Babe Ruth. The legend of The Babe, which has only grown over the years, has made a Babe Ruth signed baseball one of the most sought-after sports collectibles.

The Babe’s well-practiced script, honed during his years at a Catholic orphanage, has the same swagger and boldness in which he lived his life. As was his custom and privilege as the game’s greatest star, Ruth would typically sign his name on the ball’s sweet spot, the part of the ball from which he launched the home runs that made him famous. However, this presented Official League Ball stamped baseball has been signed by the Bambino on the side panel, a very rare occurrence. Ruth also inscribed “To My Little Pal” and an unidentified name, adding a special uniqueness to this ball. All this was done with a black fountain pen and this ball displays moderate toning and the signature and inscriptions are light, but still readable, especially Ruth’s signature. This comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication for the signatures.
