Lot #665: Roger Maris Single Signed Baseball (PSA/DNA)

Description

Presented here is a photograph and a baseball signed by New York Yankees slugger Roger Maris. Roger Maris will forever be remembered as the man who broke the greatest record in sports - Babe Ruth's 60 single-season home run record. The instant fame heaped upon Maris as he approached the magic number was almost too much for this intensely private man to bear, yet he persevered and reached 61 on the last day of the season. A handful of good years followed, but none approached that fabled 1961 season. The slugger passed away at the too-young age of 51, long before the autograph craze of the 1990s. As such, a Maris single-signed ball is the most desirable of all the Non-Hall of Famers of the post-war era, and Maris signs this presented baseball on the sweet spot in blue ink. The signature is clear, and the baseball is a creamy white.

The presented photograph is from a 33 RPM “SPORTS RECORD” record sleeve and features a determined Maris with a bat over his shoulder. There is a hole in the center of the sleeve, presumably from the record. The item contains some scratches across the cover and wear along the edges. The lot of two Roger Maris items, including a single signed baseball, come with an LOA from PSA/DNA for the signature.
