Lot #820: Frank Killen, James "Deacon" McGuire & Arthur A. Irwin Autographed Encapsulated Album Page- The Senate Page Collection (PSA/DNA)

Description

James “Deacon” McGuire and Frank E. Killen spent two of their combined 36 seasons of Major League service as teammates, both suiting up for the Washington Senators in 1898 and 1899. Killen, a pitcher, won 30 in a season twice, although arm trouble forced him to make only 18 starts over parts of two seasons for the Senators. McGuire, on the other hand, was a workhorse catcher who positioned himself behind the plate for an awe-inspiring 26 seasons. He began his career in 1884 with the Toledo Blue Stockings, sharing catching duties with Moses Fleetwood Walker, the last African-American player to appear on the major league level until Jackie Robinson in 1947.

Both men have signed this album page in black fountain pen. Killen signed as “Frank B. Killen”, inscribing “Pittsburg, Pa” below his signature. The city of Pittsburgh was spelled sans-“H” from 1890 to 1911 due to an effort by the US Board of Geographic Names to create uniformity in an era of massive westward expansion. McGuire singed beneath Killen as “James McGuire”, inscribing “Toledo Ohio” beneath his signature. This item has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA (84043053).
