The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the fiercest of the Civil War, tens of thousands Americans on both sides killed in action. This Hotchkiss Artillery Shell was likely produced by the Federal Ordnance Department during the Civil War, and was found at the Battle of Gettysburg site.
Recovered from Gettysburg, the projectile has its original time brass fuse adapter intact in the nose of the artillery round, with the shell body containing the three flame grooves cut through the base cap. All gun metal surfaces are hard and smooth with light to moderate rust pitting overall, much cleaner than almost all projectile we researched. The shell measures 3 x 5.5 inches. This is a very nice conditioned Civil War Hotchkiss percussion shell, located from the War’s most famous battle.
