Gypsy Queen Cigarettes are famous in the card collecting world as the product that was accompanied by some of the earliest-ever baseball, boxing and non-sports tobacco insert issues. The illustrations used in the Gypsy Queen cards were shared with Goodwin's Old Judge brand, but the items associated with the exotically named (and much more scarce) GQ cards are especially prized among collectors. Offered here is a complete and intact, retail display box for Gypsy Queen Cigarettes. The wood and cardboard container, measuring approximately 8" x 6-3/8" x 3-1/2" and dating to the late 1880s, showcases decorative and colorful Gypsy Queen graphics on all four sides, as well as the top and bottom surfaces of the lid. A strip of shiny cloth, designed to hold the lid open at a specified angle, has separated at the connecting point on the lid but remains attached to an inside side panel. Nicely preserved boxes like this one are exceedingly rare, and its beautiful designs will enliven any 19th Century display. One of the finest examples extant of this splendid advertising artifact!
