The great orator and writer Frederick Douglass has signed this offered cut. Douglass, who in 1838 escaped from slavery in Maryland, was a leading voice in the abolitionist movement and a vocal supporter of women’s suffrage at the historic Seneca Falls Convention of 1848. The offered cut in this lot has a visible area of 2.5 x 1.5 inches and has been signed by Douglass in black dip pen. Above and below the cut are a photograph of Douglass and a printed quote that reads “Depend upon it, men will not care much for people who do not care for themselves.” The cut, photograph, and quote are displayed in a 9.5 x 14-inch display.
