Graded PR-FR 1 by PSA. “Polar Bear” back. The T206 captioned "Demmitt, St. Louis American" is one of the rarest 1910-era tobacco cards. Ray Demmitt played for the New York Americans in his first season, 1909, and was then shipped off to the St. Louis Browns in 1910. There, he played in only 10 games. He did not appear in another Major League game until 1914, when the outfielder resurfaced with Detroit. All but one of the tobacco brands associated with the T206 White Border series pictured Demmitt with his 1909 team; Polar Bear was the only brand that released an "updated" caption placing Demmitt with his second team, St. Louis' American League franchise. Offered is a very credible specimen of this great rarity. A vertical crease, corner rounding and the inevitable product stains are elements that account for the assigned grade but fail to diminish the item's mystique. The subject's face is undisturbed, and his sought-after caption variation is unmistakable and clear. Fair condition.
