Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Hall of Famer. "Sovereign - 150 Subjects/Factory No. 25" back. Among only eleven comparably categorized examples recorded in PSA's census reporting, just two copies have been placed at this impressive tier, and none has been graded higher. (The hobby's duo of PSA NM-MT 8 examples in this design are separated from their next-highest-graded counterparts by two full grading increments.)
Not immediately apparent in this collectible's image of Ty Cobb is that he was yet a mere youngster when the tobacco insert card rage (led by T206) swept the country. Cobb was, nonetheless, the proclaimed champion of America's Pastime, and had only recently embarked on his unprecedented nine consecutive batting titles. Little wonder, then, that he was presented in four different images in the White Border creation. This one, known familiarly as his "Bat On Shoulder" portrayal, is generally regarded as at least the second-most difficult, mainstream T206 Cobb to capture (after the only slightly more challenging "Green Portrait" variety).
As already stated, the rendering of the design offered here shares highest-graded status with just one other of its kind, but only the narrowest of subjective, grading service judgement calls could have prevented the piece from becoming the first such registered higher. The centering of this masterpiece defies any objection, and piece's rich surface – as should be expected – is immaculate. Near Mint to Mint condition.
