Presented here is a Type I photograph of the Four Horseman, the legendary Notre Dame backfield of the early 1920s. All four men – Don Miller, Elmer Layden, Jim Crowley and Harry Stuhldreher, were members of the Notre Dame Class of 1924. In three seasons, the Notre Dame team led by Knut Rockne and the modern reincarnations of Pestilence, Death, Famine, and Destruction lost only twice, both times on the road to the University of Nebraska. The losses did not deter the future College Football Hall of Famers, as they capped off their magical run at Notre Dame by going undefeated in 1924 and defeating Stanford in the Rose Bowl. Although the Notre Dame stars went their separate ways after graduation, they did all play one game together, in 1925, for the Hartford Blues. In this 8 x 10 inch black and white photograph the Horsemen are standing in a line, all wearing their Notre Dame uniforms. From left to right, Don Miller, Elmer Layden, Jim Crowley and Harry Stuhldreher are staring directly at the camera. The back of the photograph has stamped “Note to Editors: Under cash reproduction of this picture must be carried the following credit: “ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOTO” This picture may not be syndicated, rented or…” The rest of the writing is covered. This historic photograph comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1P10989), which classifies this as a Type I photo.
