Babe Ruth Auction To Benefit Babe Ruth Foundation Closing February 18
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2017
The 1924 New York Yankees were coming off of four straight American League pennants after they bought Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox following the 1919 season. While the 1924 team finished second to the Washington Senators by only two games, the season was notable in that it was the last full season for Wally Pipp, who was famously replaced due to injury by Lou Gehrig.
Offered here is an Official American League Ball that has been signed by 16 members of the 1924 squad. This Official Ball has the stamp of Ban Johnson on the south panel and Babe Ruth signed his name on the sweet spot in faded black ink. Other signatures include that of Hall of Famer Waite Hoyt, Charley O'Leary, Benny Bengough, Mike McNally, Whitey Witt, Ernie Johnson, Cliff Markle, Joe Bush, the aforementioned Wally Pipp and several others. The blue stampings, which include the “Official American League Ball”, “Ban Johnson”, “Reach” and the “WARRANTED Cork Center” on this baseball are slightly faded, but are still readable. The stitching on this baseball is a combination red and blue and the ball displays toning from age and many of the signatures have faded. This signed baseball comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
