Before he was elected the 31st President of the United States, Herbert Hoover served as the Secretary of Commerce under President Warren G. Harding in 1920, a position he held under President Calvin Coolidge after Harding died in office in 1923. Hoover was a tireless cabinet member and was dubbed “Secretary of Commerce and Under-Secretary of all other departments” due to his visibility within the cabinet. Hoover worked tirelessly to develop the new technologies of radio and air travel into the U.S. economic infrastructure and was instrumental in the coordinating the federal response to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Presented here is a 8x10-inch typed letter on Official Department of Commerce letterhead signed by Herbert Hoover. The letter, dated December 4, 1925, is addressed to “The Honorable Postmaster General Washington, D.C.” and is in reference to a piece of enclosed British propaganda found on the United Kingdom’s outgoing mail. Hoover asks the Postmaster General if the Postal Department could put “Something of this kind on our foreign mail.” Hoover closed the letter with “Yours faithfully” and signed his name in black ink. The letter features a red stamp labeled “RECEIVED DECEMBER 8 1925 POSTMASTER GENERAL” on the right corner of the letter. “DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY WASHINGTON” is labeled in black on the top of the letter. Hoover’s signature is bold and the letter features two hole punches on the top, cornering, and edging on the bottom right side of the letter. The 1925 letter sent and signed by Herbert Hoover to Postmaster General Harry S. New comes with an LOA from Beckett Authentication (AA09039).
