The Notre Dame football team was in the midst of one of the greatest runs college football has ever seen. Led by head coach Knute Rockne, the Notre Dame squad won three national Championships, and had five undefeated seasons. In 1925, Ray Morelli played offensive line for the Irish. This is his Notre Dame football Letterman's Sweater, obtained directly from the Morelli family. In fact, many of the Notre Dame items in this auction came directly from this former player’s collection. The dark blue, heavy wool button down sweater features the gold interlocking "ND" on the left breast, made of thick chenille. Inside the sweater, low on the right front is a dark blue cloth tag with the name "Ray Morelli" stitched in Irish gold. The sweater shows very light signs of age, with a single hole on the back and some minor scrapes. However, this sweater is in tremendous condition relative to the amount of times Mr. Morelli proudly wore this sweater around campus during the cold months of autumn football. Ray Morelli played for Knute Rockne and is part of the tradition which is Notre Dame football. It is not very often a vintage Rockne-era item of this quality comes available at auction. Excellent overall condition.
