“Hammerin’” Hank Greenberg was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Tigers in 1929, and made his MLB debut at the age of 19 the following year. Greenberg would go on to a 13-year Hall of Fame career during which he won 2 American League MVP awards and led the AL in home runs 4 times. His 58 dingers in 1938 stood as 4th most all-time until the so-called juiced ball era of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. But before all of this, Greenberg was simply a high school student at James Monroe High School in the Bronx, NY. This 1927 Monroe HS yearbook features the signature of “Hyman B. Greenberg” in bold black ink on an autograph page in the back of the yearbook. Greenberg has signed his ‘Jewish name’ amongst many other classmates, and while his picture is not featured in the yearbook due to his status as an underclassman, the presence of this extremely rare variation on his signature makes for a one-of-a-kind collectible. The item is accompanied by a LOA from JSA.
