In 1929 the Philadelphia Athletics ended the New York Yankees stranglehold on the American League, finishing 18 games ahead of the second-place Yankees, and 30 games ahead of the third place squad. Led by grizzled manager Connie Mack and the power hitting tandem of Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons, the Athletics won 104 games, setting up a World Series matchup against National League MVP Rogers Hornsby and his Chicago Cubs. The A’s used a barrage of power to defeat the Cubs in a five game series, with Foxx, Simmons, and Mule Haas mashing two home runs each. In Game 5 of the World Series, the A’s were down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth before a Haas two-run homer tied the game. Four batters later, the hot-hitting Bing Miller doubled home Al Simmons, and the Athletics claimed their fourth World Series title.
