The first poster in World Cup history was designed by the Uruguayan artist Guillermo Laborde in advance of the 1930 FIFA World Cup in Montevideo. Laborde’s avant-garde poster won a nationwide contest held by the Uruguayan Football Association, with a second Laborde entry taking third place as well! The metal poster is titled Arquero, or goalkeeper, and shows a leaping goalie stopping a shot headed straight for the upper corner of his net. Text on this tin enameled poster reads “1er Campeonato Mundial de Football” and “Uruguay Montevideo 1930 15 Julio Agosto 15”. This item measures 78 x 35.5 centimeters. Also included in this lot are five documents, all in Spanish, relating to Laborde winning the 1930 World Cup Poster Contest, including a typed document announcing him as the winner on official AUF letterhead. This incredibly rare poster is an amazing piece of history from the very first FIFA World Cup! These items come with a LOA confirming they are part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
