During Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, legend and myth collided. It was the top of the 5th inning when Babe Ruth stepped up to the plate, pointed his bat to the stands, and knocked a home run over the center field fence, forever known as Ruth’s, “called shot.” This series also marked the first time that both teams wore numbers on the back of their uniforms as the Yankees would go on to sweep the series, defeating the Cubs 4-0. This photograph shows Babe Ruth already crossing home plate and shaking the hand of Lou Gehrig with both players smiling. Cubs’ catcher Gaby Hartnett and home plate umpire Roy Van Graflan are looking on. This photo shows evidence of editorial outlining and highlighting on certain portions of the photo. The back contains various handwritten notes in pencil and an attached sheet that’s titled “WIDE WORLD PHOTOS THE HOME RUN TWINS IN ACTION.”
