Earl Brown played both football and basketball at the college level for Notre Dame. After his playing days were over, Brown served as head coach for Dartmouth, Merchant Marine, Canisius and Auburn in the 1940s. Brown was also the head basketball coach at Harvard. He also was the head basketball coach at Dartmouth, Merchant Marine and Canisius, serving as coach for football and basketball during his time at those institutions.

This rare long sleeve blue knit football jersey was worn by Earl Brown in 1939 while representing Notre Dame at the College All-Star Game on August 30, 1939. The College All-Stars took on the New York Giants in the contest as the NFL squad hit three field goals enroute to the 9-0 win. Brown was a starter in that game at defensive end and this jersey features his number “25” sewn on in white tackle twill on the front and back. The shoulder cut-outs are white with 10 red stars sewn on in red chenile. The sides of the jersey have a red, white and blue horizontal striping pattern that run vertically down the side and the bottom of the jersey has a snap-on crotch cover. The long sleeves have built in elbow pad stitching. The jersey shows solid game use with marks and abrasions throughout and discoloration of the white numbers. The matching white pants feature the same red, white and blue horizontal striping that runs vertically down each outside leg. The waist has a built-in belt holder and the crotch is a shoe-lace-tied. The knees have been tailored with elastic to fit around the knees and these pants show excellent wear. This uniform set, which originally entered the Hobby as one of several artifacts from the Brown Estate, comes with a full LOA from Mears, who have graded this historic item a perfect A10.

Also included in this lot is an 11 x 14 framed “75th Anniversary Series Lord Elgin & Lady Elgin” watch advertisement that features Earl Brown in this uniform catching a football with the caption “This smart dependable Lord Elgin is on my team for keeps says EARL BROWN Notre Dame ‘39”. The ad also goes into detail about the Lord and Lady Elgin watches and displays eight different models, both for men and women.
