The Yankees had won the World Series in 1936, 1937 and 1938, and as strong as those clubs were, the 1939 edition was by far the best of the bunch. Even with the early season loss of Lou Gehrig, the Yankees reached into their farm system and brought in able replacements.

      Their pitching rotation of Lefty Gomez, Bump Hadley, Red Ruffing and Oral Hildebrand, backed up by ace reliever Johnny Murphy was simply unbeatable. Five of their starters batted over .300 and the team hit a combined 166 home runs, outscoring their competition by over 400 runs! The Yanks blew into the World Series and swept the Cincinnati Reds four close games, cementing their reputation as the greatest single season team of all-time.

      This Spalding Official Joe DiMaggio League ball was signed by 27 members of that historic club. Of course, the most important of the signatures is that of Lou Gehrig. The Iron Horse played his last game on April 30th and then retired after being diagnosed with the ALS that would take his life just two years later. His presence on a 1939 team ball is key. Fellow Hall of Famers Red Ruffing, Bill Dickey and Joe Gordon have signed the ball along with Tommy Henrich, Bump Hadley, Jake Powell, Wes Ferrell, Johnny Murphy, Bill Knickerbocker and Joe Beggs. This was the last installment of the club that won four straight World Championships. A Lefty Gomez signature is present but has been deemed a clubhouse. Signed in black fountain pen, the signatures simply leap off this stunningly well-preserved ball. This multi-signed baseball comes with a letter of authenticity from JSA (Y73291).
