On August 1st, 1945, Mel Ott of the New York Giants became the first player in National League history to reach the 500 home run mark with his milestone blast against the Boston Braves at Polo Grounds. Ott crushed a Johnny Hutchins offering in the third inning for his 11th home run of the season, and 500th of his career, in New York’s 9-2 win over Boston. Slim Emmerich earned the win after pitching 6.2 shutout innings in relief of Van Mungo, while Ott finished the game 2-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a hit by pitch. George Hausmann and Billy Jurges also knocked in two RBI for the Giants, while Chuck Workman and Tommy Holmes recorded RBI for Boston.

Offered in this lot is a program to the August 1st game. Handwritten on the cover of the program in pencil is “August 1, 1945 / Giants 9 / Boston 2 / Night Game”. The program is unscored, however the names of each team’s starting battery are circled in pencil inside the program. The program is in excellent condition and is a fantastic relic from a bygone era of baseball!
