Presented is a 1949 Mickey Mantle senior year portrait from Commerce (Oklahoma) High School, with the original negative and print photograph. Members of the Mantle family have explained that they do not eve have a copy of Mickey's senior photograph, yet offered here is the original negative! The 5 x 7-inch black and white head and shoulder portrait of the young Mantle portrays the future Hall of Famer with slicked-down hair parted at the right, looking towards the photographer in profile from the left, in a dark suit with a patterned tie and white shirt. The photo is his “senior portrait” and is reproduced from the original 3½ x 5-inch negative. The photo is displayed in a black paper 5½ x 7½-inch folder, with the inscription “SR Portrait from Orig. Neg” in gold type below the photo frame at the left, and the inscription “They’re Great Pals He and His Baseball Jacket Inscription from Sr Yearbook” in gold at the right. Included with the photo, negative and folder are two cuts from a 5½ x 7½-inch brown manila envelope inscribed “Mantle 6 – 3 x 5 Commerce High” in blue fountain pen and other inscriptions in gray graphite pencil. Mantle attended Commerce High from the fall of 1945 through the spring of 1949 and was already playing semi-pro baseball and would sign a contract with the New York Yankees the day after his graduation.
