Presented here is a postcard signed by the man who holds baseball’s all-time highest career batting average, Ty Cobb. A legendary center fielder with the Detroit Tigers, Cobb was baseball’s brightest star of the deadball era. An acerbic man who used his indomitable will to rule the diamonds east of the Mississippi River, Cobb claimed 12 batting titles and the 1911 Chalmers Award during his illustrious career. A Triple Crown winner in 1909, Cobb was a member of the inaugural class of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
Cobb signed this postcard, from the mid 1950s, in blue pen. He added a lengthy inscription to his signature that reads, “Why don’t you boys send blanks and postage – Trying to save [illegible] we have thousands of requests”.
