Satchel Paige is easily the most celebrated pitcher ever to come out of the Negro Leagues. Although records from the time are incomplete, it is estimated that he was winning up to 60 games a year in that circuit, and achieving double-digit strikeouts in nearly every one of them. Later, after Paige had reached the Major Leagues, Casey Stengel once said, "If the Yankees don't get ahead in the first six innings, the Browns bring in that damned old man, and we're sunk." This is an extremely handsome specimen of the legend's only career-contemporary Topps card. Its very sensitive, solid red corner at the lower right is intact and bright, and the other corners reveal virtually no wear.
