Graded NM 7 by PSA. Hall of Famer. Satchell Paige is easily the most celebrated pitcher ever to come out of the Negro Leagues. Although records from the time are incomplete, it is estimated that he was winning up to 60 games a year in that circuit, and achieving double-digit strikeouts in nearly every one of them. Later, after Paige had reached the major leagues, Casey Stengel once said, "If the Yankees don't get ahead in the first six innings, the Browns bring in that damned old man, and we're sunk." This is an extremely handsome specimen of the Cooperstown enshrinee's last regular-issue card. Its very sensitive, solid red corner at the lower right is satisfyingly intact, and the other corners reveal virtually no wear. The card's colors are essentially as rich as the day the card was printed, and the item's borders have retained their original whiteness. The facial tones are fundamentally perfect. This is Satchell Paige's only career-contemporary Topps card, and the splendid, offered example delivers a good measure of original gloss as well as impeccable registration of the painted image. Near Mint condition.
