Offered is a high-grade first issue of Sports Illustrated, dated August 16, 1954, in a commemorative leather presentation binder. The 8½ x 11½-inch color, 146-page magazine features former Milwaukee Braves star Eddie Matthews at bat and New York Giants catcher Wes Westrum in Milwaukee County Stadium on the front cover. The magazine, published by Time-Life out of New York City, became a national phenomenon which lasted well into the early 21st Century before technology changes and reader habits devastated the magazine industry. The magazine is enclosed in a clear plastic sleeve and displayed on the right side of a black leather presentation binder. On the left is a COA from Sports Illustrated, certifying that the item is from the original August 1954 press run of 600,000 copies. The front cover of the 10 x 12½ -inch black leather binder has the 1990s-era Sports Illustrated logo in gold at the center, with the legend “First Issue August 16, 1954” in the lower right corner. The front cover also has two gold metal edges on the upper right and lower left corners. This comes with a COA from Sports Illustrated.
