The annual “Old Timers’ Day” game at Yankee Stadium is an enduring tradition that was conceived to honor great ballplayers of the past. The event has always been a fan favorite and an eagerly anticipated event at the “House that Ruth Built.” The 1956 edition of this exhibition featured players from the Yankees and White Sox; one of those famous old-timers present was White Sox legend Ed Walsh (1881-1959). During the festivities, Walsh, the last man to win 40 games in a season (1908) and a member of the Hall of Fame, was presented with this 12”-diameter (Wallace) sterling silver tray. The tray is engraved, “Old Timers’ Day Honoring Veteran White Sox and Yankee Stars - Yankee Stadium - August 25, 1956 - Ed Walsh.” In the center of the tray is a detailed etching of Yankee Stadium, a venue that was not yet built when Walsh was one of the brightest stars in the American League.
