The 1956 World Series will be best remembered for Don Larsen’s perfect game in the pivotal Game 5 of the classic series between New York City’s Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers. The Yankees would win the series in seven games and Game 5 became that much more important when the Yankees tied the series with a 6-2 victory in Game 4 to even the series, after the Dodgers took the first two games at Ebbets Field. In Game 4, the Yankees snapped a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs, before breaking the game open with a single run in the sixth on a home run by Mickey Mantle and two more in the seventh on a home run by Hank Bauer.

Presented here is one of the game used baseballs from Game 4 of the 1956 World Series. This ball is an Official American League William Harridge stamped ball that displays excellent game use. Game used items from this era are extremely rare and adding to the rarity are the 10 signatures from members of both the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees – including four Hall of Famers. All of the signatures have been signed in blue ballpoint pen with Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle signing his name on the sweet spot. The north panel has the signatures of Gil Hodges, along with Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese. The west panel has the signatures of Charlie Silvera, Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, Hank Bauer, Don Larsen, who inscribed the date of his perfect game “10/8” and Andy Carey. The south panel has the signature of Gil McDougald.

The stamped sweet spot has handwritten in an unknown hand “1956 BKLYN – YANKs” in blue and “4th GAME” in black, indicating that this ball was from Game 4 of the 1956 World Series. The ball displays heavy toning with the signatures having a coating of shellac. The shellac coating has some cracking on the west panel with the five signatures. This historic baseball comes with a LOA from MEARS (317860) for the game use, plus a LOA from JSA (Y63632) for the signatures.
