Offered is a 1957 President Harry S. Truman handwritten and signed note dated “Dec. 6, 1957”. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States from 1945 to 1953, inscribed “Trip through the Library with the guides. Signed pictures for all of them. Dec. 6, 1957” in gray graphite pencil and signed his name “HST” in the lower right, also in gray graphite pencil. The inscription “File” is in gray graphite pencil in the lower left. The 3 x 4¾-inch white note paper has the legend “Mr. President” typed in black across the top. The note paper is slightly browning at the upper left corner and lower left corner. As President, Truman made some of the most crucial decisions in history. Soon after V-E Day, the war against Japan had reached its final stage. An urgent plea to Japan to surrender was rejected. Truman, after consultations with his advisers, ordered atomic bombs dropped on cities devoted to war work. Two were Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japanese surrender quickly followed. In June 1945 Truman witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations, hopefully established to preserve peace. This item comes with a LOA from JSA.
