Willie Mays acclimated to the Giants new home in San Francisco in 1958 by hitting a lofty .347 and leading the league with 31 home runs and 121 runs. In the prime of his Hall of Fame career, Mays was a perennial all-star and 1958 was no different. In 1959 he helped keep the Giants in the pennant race against the rival Dodgers and led the NL in steals for the 4th consecutive season. His 34 homers were 5th best in the league and he was in the top 10 in RBI, hits, doubles, total bases, and runs scored. In 1960, Mays batted .319 with 29 homers and led the National League in hits with 190.
Offered here is one of the bats used by Mays that has been dated to the 1958 through 1960 seasons. This Adirondack 63A model bat displays moderate use with a crack on the handle that has been repaired. There are ball marks and stitch impressions present on the barrel, along with green bat rack streaks. The handle has been lightly scored to enhance the grip. The number “24” on the knob of this bat is not original and has been deemed to have been added when this bat was autographed by Mays. Mays signed this bat on the barrel in black marker and inscribed “Best Wishes 660 H.R.”, “3000 ‘H’”, “MVP, 54, 65” and “Home Run Champ #24”. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (G55650) for the game use and has been graded a GU 6.5, plus a LOA from JSA (BB74369) for Mays’ signature and inscriptions.
