Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Hall of Famer, in a condition-sensitive "First Card in Set" appearance. Among more than 2,600 copies recorded in PSA's census reporting, just ten examples have been placed at a higher, unqualified tier. Ted Williams came into the 1958 season having just won his fifth batting title. At the age of 39, he managed to hit .388 in 1957, finishing 23 points higher than a young Mickey Mantle. Topps chose to commemorate the achievement's author – for the second year in a row – by placing Williams at the head of its set. The offered card is a superlative example, with virtually no edge and corner touches evident. A perennial "#1 card" condition scarcity, in Near Mint to Mint condition.
