Late in the 1960 season, Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop and future NL MVP Dick Groat suffered an injury, knocking him out for the rest of the regular season. On came unheralded utility infielder Ducky Schofield, who proceeded to hit .403 in Groat’s stead. Schofield and fellow infielder Bill Mazeroski helped the Pirates clinch the National League pennant in the final weeks of the season, setting up a showdown with the star-studded New York Yankees.

The World Series was the definition of a roller coaster ride, with the Yankees winning games 16-3, 10-0, and 12-0, while the Pirates won games 6-4, 3-2, and 5-2, setting up a Game Seven showdown at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. What happened next became the stuff of legend. With the score tied 9-9 Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski clubbed a solo home run to deep left field. This was the first walk off home run in World Series history.

Schofield wore this Rawlings Hall of Fame flannel Pirates home uniform during the 1960 season. “PIRATES” is sewn across the sleeveless jersey in black-on-yellow felt. Schofield’s number “11” is sewn on the back in black-on-yellow felt. The sleeve openings and collar are ringed with a black and yellow band. “Schofield” and “11 60” is embroidered on the front left tail of the jersey in black thread below a Rawlings Hall of Fame Flannel size “40” tag.

The pants have a yellow and black band running down the sides of the legs. A “11 32/33 23 ins 60” tag is sewn on the inside of the waistband above a “Schofield” tag. The pants come with a brown belt. Also included in this lot is Schofield’s size 6 ? black Pirates hat, his black-sleeved undershirt, and a pair of black stirrups with three yellow bands. “11” is embroidered in yellow thread on the strap of each stirrup. This jersey set comes with a Schofield LOA.
