A St. Paul native, Herb Brooks coached his alma mater Minnesota Gophers to 3 NCAA championships, spent part of his NHL coaching career with the hometown Minnesota North Stars, and was elected to the Minnesota-based U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990. Outside of Minnesota, his greatest claim to fame is a little thing that happened in Lake Placid once upon a time called the "Miracle on Ice." Before Lake Placid, Brooks was one of the last players cut from the 1960 Olympic hockey team that won gold at Squaw Valley. Offered here is the USA Hockey jacket worn by Brooks leading up to the 1960 Winter Olympics. This jacket is white, which has since toned due to age and presents as a cream color. “USA” is sewn on the upper left chest in blue and red tackle twill. The jacket has a button-down front with seven buttons and the collar, sleeve ends and waist are lined with blue/white/red/white/blue stripes. The front has two pockets on each side of the buttons lined in blue and the back is blank. The jacket is a size 42 as marked by the tag on the inside and was manufactured by Cosby Athletic Outfitters of New York City. The jacket does display aging but is in good overall condition. A great piece of American Hockey history and it comes with a LOA from Herb Brooks’ widow Patti Brooks, who states in the LOA that this jacket “derives from my husband’s personal collection.”
