Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was awarded this trophy for winning the Most Valuable Player award at the 1962 St. Peter’s College Invitation Basketball Tournament. This holiday tournament took place during Abdul-Jabbar’s sophomore season at Power Memorial Academy in New York. Abdul-Jabbar, then known as Lew Alcindor, was New York City’s answer to Wilt Chamberlain in the early 1960’s, with Alcindor winning Mr. Basketball USA honors in 1964 and 1965. This trophy measures approximately 18 inches tall. It is constructed of two main parts: a 4 x 4 x 4-inch pedestal and a 14-inch tall basketball player standing atop a trophy cup. A detachable plaque reads “Saint Peter’s College Invitation Basketball Tournament / Most Valuable Player 1962”. This item derives directly from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a personally hand-signed LOA from Kareem will accompany this item.
