First Generation Photograph. Black & white, 10” x 8”. Minor surface dings. Stamped on verso: “This Picture May Not Be Published” and “Star Staff Photo by Francis Routt.” Fine condition.

On November 25, 1963, “Washington Star” photographer Francis Routt (1915-1990) took this iconic photograph of John F. Kennedy Jr. on his third birthday, saluting his father’s horse-drawn casket after leaving the Funeral Mass at Washington’s Saint Matthew’s Cathedral. While other images of JFK, Jr. saluting his father’s casket exist, this one taken by Routt appears to be the only photograph also showing the flag-draped casket.

Comes with letter of authenticity from University Archives
