The business world is ripe with competition, even in the sports arena. While we may clearly understand the bat and glove manufacturers fighting to have players use their products, even the jersey manufacturers get into the fray. Various jersey manufacturers over the years include Wilson, Rawlings, McAuliffe and Spalding, with Majestic being a newer member on the scene. In 1967, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected McAuliffe to manufacture their uniforms, but when viewing the 1967 Walter Alston flannel jersey made by Spalding, that final decision must not have been easy. This heavy flannel button down jersey was used by the Spalding Rep to sell the Dodgers on wearing their jerseys. It features the team paraphed name “Dodgers” across the front in blue with the red number “24” on the left side. The buttons appear to be brand new, indicating this was used to sell the Dodgers a few times and then was likely stashed away. Just below the red number is a bold, black Sharpie “Sandy Koufax C.Y. 63, 65, 66” signature and inscription. The lower front tail has the phantom “Spalding” manufacturers tag with attached and stitched “46” size tag. Above these tags in Dodger-blue chain stitching is “Set 1 Alston 24 46 67” indicating his number, size and year. The reverse has only Alston’s famous number “24”. The condition is impeccable, naturally unused in the dugout or ever worn arguing with an umpire. All lettering is in soft felt and except for a small area on the front side “4” all letters and numerals are full intact to the flannel jersey. Full LOA from MEARS as AUTHENTIC, and PSA/DNA for the Koufax signature.
