The face of the NHL changed forever in 1967, when six new teams began play. This doubled the size of the league, and essentially led to the creation of the modern NHL. All six expansion teams began play in the West Division, including the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Flyers won the West Division in the first season of play, 1967-68, even though they finished with a record of 31 wins, 32 losses, and 11 ties in the 74-game NHL season. This performance clinched the first ever Clarence S. Campbell Bowl, presented to the winner of the West Division, and later the champion of the Campbell/Western Conference playoffs. This miniature Clarence S. Campbell Bowl was presented to Jean Gauthier, a defenseman for the Flyers in 1967-68. This was Gauthier’s only season in Philadelphia during his 10-year NHL career. Gauthier played 65 games this season, finishing with five goals and seven assists. This trophy is an eight inch tall miniature Campbell Bowl sitting on a 3 ½ inch tall wooden pedestal.
