Roberto Clemente was inducted posthumously into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 after a fatal aviation accident on December 31, 1972 while attempting to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He finished his 1972 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates getting his 3,000th Major League hit. Playing 18 seasons with the Pirates, Clemente was a National League MVP, 12-time All-Star, 4-time batting champion, and 12-time Gold Glove winner. Clemente signed this 2.75-x 6-inch check, May 31, 1972 - just 7 months prior to his tragic passing - in the amount of $15.00 to a Claude Lavoie. Using a blue ball-point pen, Clemente signed “Roberto Clemente” on the bottom of the check. The check is in overall fine condition with one vertical crease and typical cancellation stamping, including some bleed-through of stamps from the reverse to the front. This item comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication Services (A72249).
