Perhaps no game used bats from the 1976-1981 Yankees Dynasty are as sought after or scarcer than those of their captain, Thurman Munson. It was the team’s backstop that provided both the on-field and clubhouse leadership that drove the Bronx Bombers to back-to-back World Championships in 1977-1978. Munson and the Yankees were in the midst of another pennant drive when he perished in a plane crash in 1979, aged just 32.
This Hillerich & Bradsby S44 model bat was used by Munson during those last three seasons before his untimely death. The bat shows light use and is un-cracked. There are several ball marks on the left barrel and orange bat rack paint streaks visible. A light coat of pine tar still clings to its handle and the knob has the model number “S44” stamped into the knob. A hand lettered “15” in black marker – Munson’s number – tops off this very hard to find gamer from one of the most popular players to ever don the Yankees pinstripes. The bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (E36834) for the game use and has been graded a GU 7.
